I went from "outstanding individual contributor" to being promoted 3x in 5 years (while having 2 kids along the way).
But, before that...
10 years ago, I was just like you.
I was always good at my job....actually outstanding at my job. But I could never convince a hiring manager that I was capable of broader roles and more responsibility. No matter how hard I worked, or how much I took on, I was always seen as a "great individual contributor" but not "manager material."
Instead, I saw peer after peer get a promotion. They were far less capable, much less dedicated, and -- frankly -- much worse at their jobs. But, yet, they'd win over me for a job time and time again.
Yes, I was (and still am) shy.
I wasn't as "bold" as those colleagues and, certainly, struggled to sell and promote myself. But, I knew I was more than capable to get the jobs they were getting. I just didn't know how to show it in a way that felt natural to me.
Over time, I learned how to make subtle changes in how I described the work that I did and reflected that in my resume and interviews.
Those few small changes made a HUGE difference!
I was promoted 3x in 5 years to a senior leader in my company.I went from "not being manager material" to leading a large team. Furthermore, I was recognized with a "Manager of the Year" Award out of literally hundreds of managers at my company. On top of being a recognized manager at my company, I was selected to pitch ideas to our CEO more times than I wanted! And, I had a lot of leadership opportunities to choose from inside my company and at other companies.
On top of being a recognized manager at my company, I was selected to pitch ideas to our CEO more times than I wanted! And, I had a lot of leadership opportunities to choose from inside my company and at other companies.
However, most satisfying to me...I had MANY mentees who also struggled to convey their power.
Like me, they were shy and quiet. They didn't like to promote themselves. But, they were capable leaders and businesswomen.
Through my own journey, I was able to help dozens of mentees. I learned how to help competent, albeit quiet, businesswoman stand out and get a job she deserves.
It all starts with your resume.
Yes, it is a prerequisite for a new job. More than that, it is a platform for concisely and concretely conveying accomplishments and impact, which are the foundation of demonstrating leadership.
Hard work on my resume led to my ability to effectively convey my ability to do a managerial job.
But again, I want to emphasize that I was just like you 10 years ago...
Maybe some of these experiences will resonate with you:
Frustrated and a bit negative: If you're struggling to get a promotion or a job you really want, it is just so frustrating. You start to think that it will never happen and that everyone else always gets what they want and you don't. The sad truth is that these feelings can permeate your entire life and you start to think negatively in other areas of your life as well.
Lots of work and no returns: You work so hard and deliver so much to your company. But why does it matter? That hard work doesn't get you anywhere in the long run.
Losing your motivation: Now you're struggling to give as much as you do to your work. The hard work doesn't lead to anything, so then what's the point of continuing to work hard?
If you're feeling any of these, you're in the right place, Friend!
You can successfully write a resume that makes you stand out as the leader you are, without feeling like you are "selling" yourself.
I did it! And I'm even too shy to show my face on my blog!
I never knew I would be a manager, let alone a senior leader AND a mentor to many impressive female professionals who also want to be successful on their own terms, without feeling like they need to be someone else.
